If you’re suddenly having to endure a cold-water stream during what’s supposed to be your relaxing time in the shower, the first thing you should do is check your water heater. If you have a gas water heater on the older side, you may simply need to relight the pilot light. If this is the case for you and you’re not familiar with how to do so, don’t worry! The team at Canal Winchester Plumbing & Drain has put together a simple guide to walk you through the process. With our help, you’ll have hot, relaxing showers and warm running water again in no time!

WHAT TOOLS WILL YOU NEED?

  • Flashlight
  • Long-reaching lighter or match

DO I NEED TO TURN OFF THE GAS?

Yes, you should always turn the gas valve off when working with any type of gas-powered equipment. This, of course, is recommended for safety reasons. In addition, keep in mind that after you turn off the gas supply, it’s important to let at least five minutes pass by so that the previously built-up has enough time to dissipate before you relight your water heater’s pilot light once again. This step is absolutely key and should never be skipped. If you skip this step, it could result in severe damage to your home and harm to those inside of it.

WHERE IS THE PILOT LIGHT LOCATED?

Usually, you can find the pilot light positioned right below the gas valve. Though, in some models, a small panel or metal faceplate may cover the pilot light opening. This is known as the burner cover. So, if your water heater does have one, make sure that you carefully remove it and set it to the side for the time being. This step might require you to use a flashlight so that you can see better and obtain access to the area.

WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO RELIGHTING MY GAS WATER HEATER?

  1. Once five minutes have passed, turn the switch on the pilot light assembly to “pilot.” This kickstarts the relighting process by providing a small amount of gas for the pilot flame to be relit.
  1. Then press and hold down the “reset” button while also igniting your lighter at the same time in your other hand. Slowly bring it closer to the pilot light opening. Just remember to be cautious when doing this. At this point, the flame should catch and continue to remain ablaze. You may release the “reset” switch now.
  1. Watch the flame for a bit to make sure it remains lit. The flame should have a blue tint and burn steadily.
  1. After the pilot light ignites, you can turn the gas back on.
  1. Last of all, replace the pilot light burner cover after you’re finished.

Please, do not hesitate to give us a call if you’re still experiencing problems with your water heater’s pilot light after going through this guide. If your pilot light is not staying lit, there’s potential that there is an issue with a component. We would be happy to help diagnose and rectify the problem for you!
